When I entered the log home business, fifteen years ago, I was drawn to their beauty and uniqueness, but had no experience building them. I found that trying to educate myself about log homes was challenging and often frustrating. Much of the "information" about log homes, I found, was nothing more than a jumble of conflicting sales presentations. As I worked with log homes and people dreaming of their own home, I started to write and talk about my experiences. It's been great to see that so many people have found my materials useful in achieving their own log home dream. I receive e-mails and phone call from people who are using my book or workshop experience to build their own log home.
Whether it's in books, magazine articles or workshops, my emphasis is always on the practical aspects of getting from the dream to the reality of living. For this reason, my workshops and writing don't carry the "warm, fuzzy" feeling of a sales pitch. There are plenty of writers and speakers available to do that. Instead I've chosen to focus on how to get things done.
Also, my emphasis is on log home projects as most people today approach them--to build a beautiful home of similar size and with features comparable to any other type of home. These folks aren't planning on plunging into the wilderness to cut and peel their own logs. Instead they will work with a handcrafter or log home package provider and a variety of subcontractors. Their interest is mostly in managing their project. Although they may get involved in some aspect of building (usually finish work), they leave most of the heavy lifting and technical stuff to pros. While I'm as fascinated as anyone by log homes built from "scratch", that isn't most people's approach so I leave that topic to those more experienced and capable.
If you're thinking of tackling your own log home project, I encourage you to take a look at Log Homes Made Easy or consider one of my workshops. I think you'll find them useful and practical.
Best wishes for your own log home dream!
